‘Pay as you throw’ concept explored for Ontario County Landfill

With the Ontario County Landfill slated to close in 2028, the county Planning Department is looking at expanding Pay As You Throw (PAYT) programs to reduce solid waste going to the landfill and increase waste diversion.

PAYT would charge a homeowner to dispose of solid waste by weight or volume, a system designed to create an incentive for residents to increase waste diversion.

The department hired student consultants from the Cornell University Institute for Public Affairs to do a report on PAYT, which will be presented to the Board of Supervisors Environmental Quality Committee at its 1:30 p.m. Monday meeting.
