Canandaigua brewery goes for three

Although his sights were set on Geneva for a while, Twisted Rail Brewing co-owner John McMullen said an opportunity for the right spot for a tasting room, restaurant and brewery failed to develop right away.

That changed when he and partner Ian Boni found a vacant theater building on Exchange Street, near Seneca Lake. And then things changed really fast.

On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced 12 projects for the city as part of a $10 million state Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The $475,000 awarded for the repurposing of the building at 499 Exchange St. will not only create more than a dozen jobs, Cuomo said, but also serve as an anchor establishment and destination that will attract visitors.

McMullen and Boni only learned of the building opportunity and grant earlier in the year. In fact, Boni said he found out about Cuomo’s announcement and visit to Geneva on Friday, when he and McMullen were told they might want to be there for this.
