Laying low near Sodus Bay (photo)

I happen to come upon this American Bittern at Sodus Bay during the holiday weekend. It is a solitary bird, and although common in much of its range, usually keeps itself well-hidden and is difficult to observe. It typically hunts by walking stealthily in shallow water and among the vegetation (as seen here in this image), stalking its prey, but sometimes stands still, in ambush.
