Marcus Whitman High School and recent Finger Lakes Community College grad Karen Luong has been named the 2017 Empire State Potato Growers Scholarship winner.
Luong, of Rushville, will receive $500 per academic year for up to four consecutive years of agricultural education at a college in New York state.
Luong first became interested in agriculture when she took an agriculture class in high school.
“In high school we had a choice between biology or an agriculture course, and I wanted to be different so I chose agriculture,” Luong said.
She will be recognized at the Ag Leadership Luncheon at Empire Farm Days on Aug. 9 at Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls.
In addition to being the 2017 Empire State Potato Growers Association Scholarship winner, Luong also received a SUNY Chancellor Award for Student Excellence.
The Ag Leadership Luncheon program includes remarks from representatives with Empire Farm Days, American Agriculturist magazine and Farm Credit East, along with presentations of the New York State Agricultural Environmental Management Award, Empire State Potato Growers Association Scholarship, and recognition of the Farm Credit East NY Scholarship recipients.
