The trial of a Geneva man accused of shooting local boxer Aleem “Hammer” Whitfield is scheduled to begin this week in Ontario County Court.
District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo said jury selection in the trial of Nelson Mateo Jr. begins Tuesday. The 22-year-old faces felony charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree criminal use of a firearm.
The top count, first-degree assault, is a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
Geneva police arrested Mateo in December. He is accused of being the lone assailant in the April 29, 2016, shooting of Whitfield at the corner of Linden and Seneca streets at about 1 a.m. Mateo allegedly fired five shots and hit Whitfield once.
Police said Whitfield, who was hit in the leg, recovered but did not cooperate with their investigation. Mateo is accused of fleeing to New Jersey after the shooting.
