Rochester native Gap Mangione and his New Blues Band will perform at Keuka College’s “Concert in the Park” on July 22.
Free and open to the public, the concert begins at 7 p.m. on the Norton Chapel lawn. In the event of inclement weather, it will be held in the chapel.
Guests are encouraged to take their own chairs and blankets. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Mangione was born in Rochester to a close, music-loving family, and he and his brother Chuck began performing together. By the time Gap was 13, he was playing the blues on the family piano and encouraging Chuck to join him in improvisations.
Two years later, he was writing and arranging for local big bands while also playing in semi-professional groups.
During his college days at Syracuse University, Mangione was the house pianist at the Three Rivers Inn Theater Restaurant and played in big bands accompanying the likes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole. Mangione’s jazz quintet has opened for Dizzy Gillespie in concert — at Gillespie’s request.
