Friends and colleagues remember former Canandaigua Mayor Earl Coleates

Two special stained glass napkin holders grace the tables in the home of Ed and Vanessa Varno.

Part of what makes them so special, besides their artistry, are that they were made by their good friend Earl Coleates, former mayor of Canandaigua.

Varno, executive director of the Ontario County Historical Society, enjoyed recalling the story of the making of the ornaments this week as he and other friends attended services for Coleates, who died July 12.

Varno said Coleates knew he and his wife cherished their horses. Wanting to surprise them, Coleates headed to the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce where he pressed Elisha Everson, manager of communications and events, for information about the Varno livestock.

“Of course she didn’t know anything about them,” Varno said, noting Coleates, whom he said was “not an Internet kind of guy,” told Everson to look them up online. She was able to find some information with a picture.

“Print that out. Print that out,” Coleates excitedly told Everson, according to Varno.
