Canandaigua to apply for grant to help stalled lakeside resort

The Canandaigua City Council on Thursday night unanimously voted to go ahead with a plan to apply for $750,000 for a Community Development Block grant through the state Office of Community Renewal on behalf of the developers of the stalled Canandaigua Finger Lakes resort project.

Harry Sicherman, a consultant who spoke at a public hearing Thursday night and who is familiar with this particular grant process, said he believes the project is worthy of funding based on the number of jobs that will be created, new private investment and the boost in tourism the project can provide.

Funding can be applied toward economic development, particularly because the project may lead to the hiring of low- to moderate-income workers, city officials said.
