An Auburn man will spend up to the next five years in prison for brutally stabbing one of his neighbors in the stomach.
Sammy Sheffield, 49, of 9 Barber St., pleaded guilty to felony first-degree assault in June. At the time, he told the court he fought with his neighbor at 11 Barber St. earlier this year.
Cayuga County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Valdina said the fight broke out on Jan. 15 after the victim, a 44-year-old man, forcibly touched Sheffield's girlfriend.
"(Sheffield) had some beef with the victim … and he literally eviscerated the victim," Valdina said Thursday in court. "This was borderline attempted murder. It's one of the worst things I've seen in 19 years (with the district attorney's office)."
