Yates County walkers were full of Hope

For the second year running, the playing field at the Yates Community Center on North Main Street in Penn Yan hosted the 2017 Hope Walk, the fundraising relay walk for cancer patient support. Teams exceeded last year’s total of over $33,000 by about $4,000. And all of the $37,000 will benefit Yates County residents.

The Hope Walk organizers created their own local event in 2016 after the American Cancer Society declared Yates County to be too small to host another Relay for Life of its own. Rather than the small percentage in the past, all funds raised by Hope Walk will go to support local cancer patients and their families as they seek treatment for the disease.

Hope Walk Chair Dawn Shipman praises all the efforts of the teams and the 225 Hope Walkers. “We still have a couple more events before the end of the year,” says Shipman, “which we HOPE will bring us to our $40,000 goal.”
