An annual Ring of Fire observance around Canandaigua Lake began well before dusk again this year, and was celebrated with story, song and dance.
The bonfires, flares and fireworks followed at nightfall, as families and friends gathered to mark the end of another summer and passage into autumn.
In mid-afternoon, Middlesex Heritage Group hosted its 26th annual Seneca Heritage Day at historic Overackers Corners Schoolhouse in Middlesex. Against the backdrop of cornfields and hills kissed with late summer color, Ganondagan State Historic Site Director Peter Jemison shared the history and contributions of the Seneca Nation with about 150 attendees.
Another speaker, Ronnie Reitter, talked about women’s roles in the Iroquois Confederacy and their influence on early feminists.
