A red, white and blue tribute at St. Mary’s in Canandaigua

Current and past service members, first responders, and victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are recognized this week with 107 flags installed on the lawn of St. Mary’s School as a “Field of Honor.”

An opening ceremony was held Monday for the four-day tribute, which will continue until Thursday, when a closing ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 95 N. Main St.

Each flag honors an individual person and is accompanied by a tribute card identifying the honoree and their service, as well as who purchased the flag. Visitors may stop by anytime, including the evenings.

Organizers hope to make the Field of Honor an annual event and to double the amount of flags displayed next year.
