City of Auburn files court petition to avoid paying for costly demolition of former dry cleaners

The city of Auburn could have to foot the bill for the expensive demolition of an abandoned State Street building that caught fire at the end of August.

Demolition of the 204 State St. property could be complicated because the property was once home to a dry cleaner and leather processing facility and there is the possibility of chemical contamination.

The building was home to Chet’s Cleaners from the late 1960s until 2003, when the city acquired the property. The building changed hands in 2005 and was used as a residential property. In 2009, the building was sold to the current owner, Mirek W. Kupczynski.
