Man was high, possessed heroin during Shortsville crash

Deputies say that on Friday around 10:06 am a single-car crash on West Main St. in Shortsville resulted in a 68-year-old North Syracuse man being charged with possessing heroin.

John R. DelGiorno, 68, of North Syracuse was traveling west on West Main St. when he crossed the center line, exited the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The pole was severed and power lines were knocked down. The vehicle then continued west and struck a parked vehicle. After striking the parked vehicle the truck hit a stone retaining wall and came to rest in a yard close to a residence.

Investigation determined that DelGiorno was impaired by drugs and possessed heroin at the time of the accident.

He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, DWI drugs, failure to keep right and failure to stop a stop light.

The charges will be answered at a later date.
