Wayland woman charged in welfare fraud investigation

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit reports the arrest of Ashley M. Briggs, 27, of Wayland.

Investigators say Briggs reported to the Steuben County Department of Social Services false Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) applications and false SNAP re-certifications. As a result, she received public assistance that she would not have been eligible for.

On September 19th, Briggs was charged with one count of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, and fourth-degree grand larceny. Both are felony charges, according to deputies.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office.
