When he decided to transition to a superintendent’s position, Matt Sickles knew the kind of district he wanted to work for and eventually found it at Phelps-Clifton Springs (Midlakes) Central School District.
He didn’t necessarily expect to move 200 miles away from where he grew up and spent his entire career, but Midlakes met all of his criteria, so he brought his family from eastern New York to western New York.
“As a high school principal, I always stood up at graduation and talked to kids about accepting challenges, taking risks and going out there and doing new things,” he said during a recent interview. “I decided maybe it was time for me to take my own advice and go on a new adventure.”
Prior to joining Midlakes on Sept. 1, Sickles served as junior-senior high school principal in the Schuylerville Central School District in Saratoga County.
It was a job he loved in a community he loved, so he felt he could be selective in searching for a district to lead.
