Temps moderate, but ‘big chill’ likely not due for another week

Several cold fronts will move through the Finger Lakes over the next 24 to 36 hours. However, temperatures are going to struggle to drop significantly in the short-term.

Two of them will go through on Wednesday, according to FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil, who says that temperatures will stay in the 40s on Wednesday – even with their passage.

By nightfall, temperatures will be in the 30s – but even over the latter part of this week – they will remain high enough that it won’t feel like early-December.

Montreuil says that by early-next week temperatures in the upper-40s or low-50s is entirely possible, before some more significant changes swing in.

He says that a “pattern swap” is setting up, and some models are suggesting that by the end of next week – winter could be making a return to the Finger Lakes.

It doesn’t guarantee snowfall. It just means temperatures are going to feel seasonable – instead of getting the upper-40s and 50s that the region has been experiencing the last several weeks.

The National Weather Service shared that sentiment on Wednesday as well. “Winter is expected to finally make an appearance by late next week into weekend, with much colder temperatures,” the NWS Buffalo office reported on Twitter. “The pattern would also favor active lake effect snows off of Lakes Erie and Ontario.”
