Mynderse wins at Newark for first time in 6 years; Wayne, Midlakes & PY win league openers (W-FL round-up 12/8)

The Mynderse Academy boys basketball team have struggled to win on the home court of their biggest rival Newark for the past 6 seasons but finally broke through on Friday night with a 55-48 win in a game that was never as close as the final score indicated. Mynderse took an 11 point lead into the halftime locker room before opening up the margin to 16 points early in the 2nd quarter behind hot shooting from Devin Anderson and solid defense and rebounding from Hunter Haust and the rest of the Blue Devils.

Devin Anderson finished with 17 points. Quentin Battle added 12 and Hunter Haust scored 10 for the Blue Devils who improved to 3-0 on the season. For Newark, Taylor Clements scored 17 and Terry Anglin scored 16. Newark falls to 0-4.

Midlakes improved to 2-1 on the year with a 49-41 win over Waterloo, avenging their 1-point loss to the Indians in Clifton Springs last season. Senior guard Bryce Burri led all scorers with 19 points and big-man Trevor Milliman added 10 points and 13 rebounds. For Waterloo, sophomore Mike Hubbard led the Indians with 17 points in the loss that dropped his squad to 0-3.

The Marcus Whitman Wildcats picked up a key early season win over Dundee defeating the Scots 50-38 in Rushville. Jon Donovan, Liam Prendergast and Riley McLoud each scored 10 points in the victor that improves Whitman to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the West.

Honeoye defeated South Seneca, 67-55, behind 24 points from Max Yale on 6 three-pointers. Just one game removed from scoring his 1,000th career point, Jon Marble added 17 more in the win.

Friday’s W-FL girls action…

The Blue Devils counterpart on the girls side also had success against Newark as they hosted the Lady Reds.

Mynderse used a 19-0 run to end the 2nd quarter and take a 35-11 halftime lead cruising to a 57-34 victory. Hannah Brown Trice ignited the run with her defense and ball distribution. Mynderse was led by a trio of scorers with Mary Doell and Hannah Lang netting 12 points followed by Heidi Miller with 10. Miller added 7 rebounds. Hannah Brown Trice finished with 9 assists and 7 steals.

Mynderse moves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Finger Lakes East. Newark falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Finger Lakes East.

Mynderse resumes play Monday night, taking on South Seneca at the Baker Gymnasium in a game that will be streamed live on FL1 Radio and re-streamed live with full game video at 10:30 pm on FingerLakes1.TV. Jim Sinicropi & Mike Alessio will have the call for FL1 Sports.

Coach Mike Krauza’s Red Creek Lady Rams cruised to a 67-38 win at Sodus behind a 21 point, 5 rebound and 7 steal game from freshman Izzy Wilbur. Alex Mosqueda added 15 points and 7 steals and Emma Griffin scored 10 points. For Sodus, Fatimaah Findley had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 6 steals and teammate Tamia White finished with 13 points, and 6 rebounds. Red Creek is now 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in Wayne County league play. Sodus falls to 0-2.

The Lyons Lions kept pace with Red Creek in the Wayne County standings with a 46-37 win at Marion. Alison Cook scored 17 points in the win and Caiden Crego added 10 points, 4 assists and 8 steals. Adrianna Kemp contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds. The Lady Lions are 3-0.
