They came, they chewed, they chose.
And the judges in this year’s Finger Lakes Times Cookie Contest, sponsored by Simple Sweets Bakery in Geneva, had a record number of cookies to consider — 39. That number of entries was two more than last year and one more than the previous high of 38 cookies in the 2013 contest.
Coming out on top was Renee Gigliotti of Seneca Falls, who baked her winning Apricot Cream Cheese Drops for the first time Monday morning, the day the contest was held. Second place was claimed by Emily Hoven with her Egg Nog Cookie Sandwich with Rum Filling; interestingly, Hoven works for Simple Sweets owner Marina Burgess, who encouraged her to enter the contest. And third place went to Pat Certo of Geneva, who made Salted Turtle Cookies — her mother’s recipe.
All day Monday, cookies were dropped off at the Times’ office and dutifully shepherded to the conference room, which had taken on a delectable smell by mid-afternoon.
