Auburn City Council alters zoning code after hearing residents’ concerns

Auburn's South Street property owners filled Memorial City Hall's council chambers to express their opposition to a proposed change to the city's zoning code and how it would impact the historic district during Thursday night's Auburn City Council meeting.

The proposed change would eliminate the current C-4 specialized commercial district and replace it with a new downtown district. The proposed downtown district extends into the historic district from Lincoln Street to Fitch Avenue on the west and Hamilton Avenue to the east.

Residents said they do not support the proposal because combining the C-4 district with the downtown district would allow more permitted uses within the historic district, including commercial businesses such as night clubs, dry cleaners or hotels.
