Friday was a good day to be in jail.
An annual gathering at the Ontario County Jail of county law enforcement, judicial system, support agency and municipal leaders honored and thanked the area’s top achievers.
At the helm of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office 2017 Holiday Awards Luncheon was Sheriff Phil Povero, who presented commendations to outgoing District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo, County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition Coordinator Petrea Rae and Eastview Mall Security Patrol officers, among others.
At the top of the list was Rae, whose leadership made possible the placement of 16 permanent medication drop boxes countywide. Six senior housing centers also have permanent onsite medication return facilities. As a result, an estimated 6,000 pounds of unwanted drugs have been properly turned in this year.
Rae also coordinates community forums on heroin and prescription drug abuse, Povero said.
