Four share ‘Officer of the Year’ award in Ontario

Four members of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office shared the department’s “Officer of the Year” award at Friday’s annual holiday awards ceremony.

Sgt. Kelly Fogarty, Deputy James Baker, Investigator Chris Drake and Investigator John Torlish were cited for their work at Eastview Mall. Sheriff Phil Povero and Mike Kauffman, the mall’s general manager, handed out the awards.

“We partnered with Eastview Mall years ago to improve safety at the mall,” Povero said. “Because of that, we have earned statewide recognition and Eastview is considered one of the safest malls in New York state to shop at.”

Povero said Fogarty, Baker, Drake and Torlish have made significant felony and misdemeanor arrests at the mall on a regular basis. He added that due to the cooperation of mall officials, license plate readers have been installed in some areas of the mall and have led to arrests in criminal investigations in Ontario and other counties.
