Joe Sposato moved to Waterloo from Geneva when he was in the third grade, graduated from Waterloo High in 1970 and returned after college in 1974 to have a long career as a math teacher, coach and athletic director.
Guidance counselor Mark Pitifer believes it would a good idea to name the Waterloo High gymnasium the “Joe Sposato Sports Center’’ after the well-known local figure.
Pitifer submitted a petition seeking to name the gym after Sposato, who coached the golf team even after retiring in 2010.
Not athletically gifted, but with a passion for athletics, Sposato would go to LaFayette Field when he was still in elementary school to watch Waterloo High baseball games and hang around the teams and legendary coach Bill Carey. Carey gave him a job keeping the scorebook.
Carey also coached basketball and Sposato kept the scorebook for those teams as well. Sposato later acknowledged watching Carey coach inspired him in his own passion to coach.
