Newark tops Midlakes in lone Saturday W-FL hoops match-up; New FL1 Sports Power Rankings released

The only game on the slate for Wayne-Finger Lakes varsity boys or girls basketball on Saturday night featured a Finger Lakes East boys match-up between the Midlakes Screaming Eagles and the Newark Reds in Newark.

The Reds jumped came out of the locker room hot and pushed ahead of Midlakes early to lead 25-8 after the first quarter, They extended their lead to 25-15 at the half and eventually won 65-52. Newark held Midlakes standout senior guard Bryce Burri to just one field goal through the first three quarters. Burri would finish with 12. Matt Mattoon added 11 and Devin Hicks scored 9 in the loss.

Newark was led by Jayden Peters who broke out of an early season shooting slump to post 21 on the night. Senior guard Terry Anglin added 14 and senior center Taylor Clements scored 13 as Newark won their third straight game to improve their record to 3-4 and 3-1 in league play.

Newark is back in action on Thursday at the Elmira Holiday Tournament. Midlakes hits the court again on Thursday against Lyons as part of the NYCC Holiday Classic. That game is game 2 of a quadruple-header that can be seen live on FingerLakes1.com…
