Wind Chill Watch issued for entire FLX ahead of frigid weekend

Since Tuesday’s forecast, very little has changed. Temperatures are expected to moderate again on Wednesday, this time with less wind in the picture — making for one of the best weather days we’ve had in recent weeks.

Sunshine and high temperatures in the mid-20s will make for a comfortable, or at the very least, tolerable day in the Finger Lakes. Need to get outside to get something taken care of? Today will be your chance, as temperatures begin to plunge again on Thursday — before ushering in the most-frigid temps felt in years.

According to FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil, the coldest and most-extreme weather of the year is coming later this week.

Montreuil says it will start with a low pressure system, which will spin up off the east coast over the Atlantic. While it won’t bring much in the way of precipitation to the region — it will bring a reinforcing shot of extreme cold behind it.

Temperatures on Thursday will get into the mid- and upper-teens with lake effect snow throughout the region. Then on Friday, the bottom will fall out beneath the already-frigid temperatures.

Montreuil says by Friday morning, many places will fall below zero and remain there until Sunday. Portions of the Finger Lakes will not reach zero degrees for daytime high temperatures. With lows ranging between -5 and -10 degrees — it will also provide some of the most-extreme wind chill readings the region has seen in multiple winters.

Over those two days, winds will be gusting between 30 and 40 mph, which will keep wind chills consistently at, or below -20.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Watch for the entire region ahead of this cold blast, and as typical for weather this extreme — school cancellations throughout the region are likely by Friday.
