This weekend’s winter storm cancelled all Section V basketball contests scheduled for Saturday, except one. Clyde-Savannah and Lyons would renew their storied rivalry in front of a sold-out crowd of over 750 at the Atwood Gymnasium and over 1,200 more viewers watching FingerLakes1.com’s live steam. Clyde-Savannah had won the previous four meetings between the two school and held a 1.5 game lead at the top of the Wayne County league standings heading into the contest.
Both teams came out of the gate firing on all cylinders culminating in a half court shot from Dru Carnevale at the first quarter buzzer to make the score 25-21. The fast paced action continued in the second quarter with a halftime score of 49-45. Lyons would trail most of the second half before Clyde-Savannah went cold from the field and Lyons capitalized with transition baskets and a pair of big three point shots by Justice Smith to outscore the Golden Eagles 25-15 in the final period. When the final horn sounded, the Lyons students stormed the court and their Lions took home a thrilling 87-82 win.
For C-S, Marcus Chance scored 25 points, Dru Carnevale had 24 on 5 three pointers and Derrick Chance finished with 18. Freshman Camden Chance scored 10 points in his first appearance in the Route 31 Rivalry game.
For Lyons, junior standout Justice Smith put out an effort for the ages. Smith finished with a triple-double highlighted by 36 points to go along with 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Junior Davis Weaver scored 12, freshman Justin Smith scored 12 and sophomore Benji Kemp scored 11.
Lyons (7-1/10-2) pulls to within one-half game of Clyde-Savannah (8-1/9-3) in the Wayne County Standings. The teams meet again on February 8th at Clyde-Savannah High School.
