Canandaigua Fire Capt. Don Phillips and firefighter Ben Cramer on Thursday night were presented with Liberty Medals, which is the highest honor the state Senate bestows on individuals.
State Sen. Pam Helming, R-Canandaigua, in presenting the medals during a City Council meeting, said both firefighters demonstrated heroic actions in saving the life of Camelot Square Apartment resident Michelle Fridley on Jan. 6.
Fridley, a quadriplegic who uses a wheelchair, and a pet were pulled from the fire. After the rescue, Cramer and Phillips then battled the fire.
Mayor Ellen Polimeni said the two showed great courage.
