Dollar Tree, McDonalds plans approved by Penn Yan planning board

Construction on the Dollar Tree store at 211 Lake St. will begin as soon as possible, and will be carried out in two phases that should be complete before the beginning of summer.

The Penn Yan Planning Board approved a revised site plan March 5. The plan includes the addition of trees and landscaping elements in addition to the new appearance of the former Shurfine and Super Duper.

The revised plan calls for a new facade that eliminates the existing overhanging roof and moves the store entrance to the middle of the front. The original site plan, which was presented last month, would not have changed the exterior appearance of the building extensively, and members of the planning board and public objected. The new plan will result in a sand-colored box building with the center entrance.

Three underground fuel tanks that once served a filling station at the Shurfine store were removed in March 2010.

Last week the Village Zoning Board of Appeals did not approve a variance that would have permitted a sign installed on the existing overhang, but the existing pole sign is permitted under the current village code. The store owner or tenant can return with a variance application for a sign to be affixed on the front of the building.
