NWS: Advisories set to expire later today

As winter takes one last swipe at the Finger Lakes — the region is preparing for an event that could be much worse than a typical, snowy evening.

*** PLANNING FORECAST AT A GLANCE ***

The National Weather Service has issued Ice Storm Warnings for Cayuga, Wayne, Ontario, Monroe and Livingston counties, which are active until 2 p.m. on Sunday. “Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the combination of ice and strong northeast winds,” said forecasters with the National Weather Service. “Travel will be difficult at times, especially tonight and early Sunday morning when pavement temperatures are coldest.”

Ice accumulations of a half-inch are expected, with some localized heavier amounts possible.

The remainder of the region is in a Winter Weather Advisory, which is active until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Icing is expected in these areas, too, but will likely be lesser than the warned areas.

Lakeshore Flood Warnings are active along the Lake Ontario shoreline, due to the high winds that are expected to batter the region overnight and into the day on Sunday. Flooding and erosion are the primary concerns at this point.

If heading out overnight or during the early-morning hours use extreme caution.

We’ll continue to update this post with the latest information throughout the event.
