Geneva woman wins free groceries for a year

Jay Morabito is a very perceptive second-grader.

The 8-year-old knew something was up when his great-grandmother, Joan Morabito of Geneva, began to act and talk excitedly.

“She was acting like she drank 18 bottles of Mountain Dew,” he said.

And right now, she certainly can buy 18 bottles of the soda. Actually, she can buy a whole lot more.

Morabito is a Free Food for a Year winner in Tops Friendly Markets’ customer Monopoly Collect and Win game.

Morabito was presented a check for $5,000 on Thursday. She and her family, along with several Tops employees, got together for cake and bottled water to celebrate.

She can explain her excitement.

“I have never won anything,” Morabito said. “Ever.”

Morabito is a regular customer at the grocery, sometimes stopping for items two or three times a week. She was doing a little extra shopping to get ready for Easter when she received her winning tickets, she said.

Store manager Kristin Lane said Morabito approached her to find out if she had won. And, of course, she had, and Lane said she was glad she was able to tell her the good news.
