The Penn Yan Academy Drama Club presented the hit Broadway musical March 8-11 here at home. Catch Me If You Can, based on the DreamWorks Motion Picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, follows the unbelievable true story of Frank Abagnale Jr. (Junior Noah Detar). Abagnale, a con man, and master of fraud, wrote over $2.5 million in bad checks and took on a number of identities between the ages of 15-21. The musical follows Frank as he is pursued across the country by FBI Special Agent Carl Hanratty (Senior Juan Espana) and his team (Senior Ivan Rosas, Junior Owen McFarland, and Sophomore Jacob Eskildsen), working to stay a step ahead of the authorities and find the life he dreams of after the separation of his parents (Seniors Zack Blauvelt and Jessica Rossi). Frank is living the high life until he decides to impersonate a doctor and meets nurse Brenda Strong (Junior Jenna Compton). As Hanratty and his men close in, a trip to visit Brenda’s parents (Seniors Dan Falter and Ruby Schwartz) threatens to change Frank’s life.
Detar, Jenna Compton, Juan Espana, Zack Blauvelt, Jessica Rossi, and Ruby Schwartz also represented PYA in the opening number of the Gala Performance at the Auditorium Theatre May 10, all in positions of prominence.
