Student faces felony charge after threat in Seneca Falls

The Seneca Falls Police Department reports the arrest of a juvenile male following a joint-investigation on the Seneca Falls Central School District Campus this week.

Police received a report from officials of a student threatening another. Law enforcement and school officials launched an investigation, and procedures were put in place to ensure that the comments made by the aggressor were not a legitimate threat.

Police checked the student’s residence to ensure that there was no access to weapons.

During the investigation, police interviewed several witnesses and obtained statements from them. At the conclusion of the investigation, the juvenile was charged with one count of felony making a terroristic threat.

The male was petitioned to family court for further proceedings.

The Seneca Falls Police Department said the following in a statement:

“All threats, regardless of the intent, will be taken seriously and dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. The Seneca Falls Police Department and the Seneca Falls Central School District is committed to being proactive to ensure the safety of our students, staff and community.”

Seneca Falls Central School District Superintendent Bob McKeveny added the following in a letter to faculty, students, and the community:

“This letter is to make you aware that the district became aware earlier today of alleged threatening comments made by a middle school student. Other students immediately reported the concern about the comments to the Principal and school staff. Upon becoming aware, administrators and school staff worked with the School Resource Officer, Seneca Falls Police Department, and the student’s parent to investigate the threatening comments. Upon detailed investigation, we learned that there is no credibility to the threatening comments and appropriate action has been taken in regards to the concern. Please know that there is no concern about student safety as a result of this situation.

The District recognizes that the safety of all students and staff continues to be a top priority. All concerns, such as the one brought to our attention earlier today, are taken seriously, investigated, and addressed accordingly.

If your child expressed concern about the threatening comments or have heard about the comments, please assure them that the situation was addressed and that it is safe to attend school tomorrow. We also ask for your assistance by reinforcing the message that concerns need to be reported to school staff so it can be immediately addressed.

Thanks for your assistance in promoting a safe school environment.”
