There has been talk about expansion projects at the Geneva Family YMCA for the last two decades — if not longer. In most cases, though, little or nothing happened.
That started to change about five years ago, when longtime community benefactors Dave and Brenda Rickey began meeting with YMCA officials.
“Over the last several years, Dave and I made multiple visits to the YMCA,” Brenda Rickey said. “We were impressed with the volume of members and the spectrum of ages of those members. They are reaching out to young kids with swimming and to senior citizens with the Silver Sneakers program.
“The YMCA is used by so many in the community, but we saw some work that needed to be done to get the building back in shape.”
“The facility gets so much use,” Dave Rickey added. “The upside is everyone in the community uses it. The downside is all that use accelerates wear and tear on the building.”
Fast-forward to the present time. After more meetings involving the Rickeys, YMCA staff and board members, plans for a $4 million expansion and renovation project jelled.
