John Nabinger has spent 15 years as a public defender in Seneca County courts.
Now, the Syracuse resident wants to be the county’s top prosecutor.
The Seneca County Republican Committee has endorsed Nabinger for district attorney in the November election. The committee also endorsed incumbent Republican Sheriff Tim Luce of Waterloo in his bid for a second, four-year term.
The endorsements were made Jan. 23 and announced Tuesday by party chairman Thomas Fox.
If elected, Nabinger would have a certain number of days to establish residency in Seneca County.
Former District Attorney Barry Porsch was elected county criminal, family and surrogate court judge last November. First Assistant District Attorney Mark Sinkiewicz was named acting DA.
Sinkiewicz, a Democrat, will have to run in November if he wants to continue as DA beyond 2019. The Ovid resident has indicated he plans to do so.
Receiving the GOP Committee endorsement means committee members will circulate nominating petitions for Nabinger and Luce so they can be on the ballot. The first day to sign a designating petition is Feb. 26.
