The Yates County History Center is offering a series of family research workshops during March-Genealogy Month.
At 7 p.m. March 6, Steve and Aaron Mumby will discuss strategies for conducting oral history interviews. Steve is a retired Ontario County Sheriff’s Department investigator and has conducted interviews of over 100 World War II veterans. He will review interview techniques, types of quesitons, and ways to draw out stories from your family members. Aaron will discuss the technological aspects of capturing and preserving these precious stories.
At 1 p.m. March 13 Yates County History Center Director Tricia Noel will lead a workshop, Intro to Genealogy. Participants will learn many resources for family history research and how to organize what you find. Bring along some family members’ vital statistics to start your family tree.
Using Ancestry.com will be the topic of the workshop at 1 p.m. March 20. Noel will guide participants through basic and more complex steps to capturing your family history via this well known website. Participants must bring a WiFi enabled laptop for this workshop only.
At 1 p.m. March 27 join volunteers Steph-anie Olsen, Andy Baus, and Noel as they speak about Researching Your European Ancestors. These instructors will share information about researching Danish, German, and English/Irish ancestors.
