The mighty Mississippi and the adventures of Huck Finn will flow through the Midlakes auditorium when the award-winning Theatre Experience of Midlakes High School stages “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
Performances are 7:30 p.m. March 15, 16, 22 and 23; and 2 p.m. March 17.
The musical is based on Mark Twain’s classic 1884 tale of a reckless youth who fears the destructive nature of his father, and Jim, a runaway slave, during their often suspenseful and humorous journey along the mighty Mississippi River.
It doesn’t take long for Huck and Jim to be reminded of the seriousness of their actions as they try to avoid capture while trying to get Jim to freedom.
The original Tony Award-winning 1985 Broadway production was written by William Hauptman with the score by Roger Miller. It ran for more than 1,000 performances. The musical’s score includes “Muddy Water,” “River in the Rain,” “When the Sun Goes Down in the South,” and much more.
The cast is led by freshman Holden Dorr (Huck Finn) and junior Erik Dillow (Jim), and includes seniors Jeanne Durham (Widow Douglas/Alice), Emily Frasca (Miss Watson/Joanna Wilkes), Spencer Bonawitz (Pap Finn/The Duke), Sarah Byron (Mary Jane Wiles), Nathan Belcher (Silar Phelps), and Katlyn Upchurch (Sally Phelps); juniors Tanner VanDeMortel (Mark Twain/The Doctor) and Coby Reals (Judge Thatcher/The King); sophomores Cassie VanDamme (Strange Woman) and Dominick Frere (A Young Fool); and freshmen Aidan Conover (Tom Sawyer) and Jennifer Petracchi (Susan Wilkes).
Natalie Wilkes is the student director.
