Town of Canandaigua seeks ownership of Onanda

After years of footing the bill for maintenance and improvements to Onanda Park, the town of Canandaigua would like to own the lakefront property.

The Town Board earlier this week voted to request the state of New York to turn over ownership of the park on County Road 16, which this year celebrates its 100th anniversary as a camp and park and its 30th anniversary as a town park.

The state owns the lakeside portion of the park, while the town owns the upland portion, according to Town Manager Doug Finch.

This year, the town is paying to make paths and walkways Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant and has paid for roof replacements, fixed up the park cabins and performed other maintenance measures, Finch said.
