Seneca County Board of Supervisors may join class action lawsuit

The Seneca County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on whether to join a class action lawsuit against telephone service providers over their alleged failure to give the county telephone surcharge fees to fund the 911 system.

Under state law, counties are entitled to charge a surcharge on telephone service bills to help pay for 911 services. The telephone companies are supposed to give the counties that surcharge revenue each month.

The resolution before the board states that the county has reason to believe telephone service providers such as Verizon, AT&T, Time Warner Cable and Frontier Communications, have failed and continue to fail to bill for, collect and remit the 911 surcharge as required, costing the county thousands of dollars for its 911 program.
