Todd Benton was heading home after completing his shift as a corrections officer at the Willard Drug Treatment Campus last year when he saw a pickup truck strike an embankment. It rolled over and landed on its roof in the middle of the road.
As Benton dialed 911, fellow Corrections Officer Mike Denkenberger was driving to work at Willard DTC when he came upon the scene.
He saw a man attempting to drag himself away from the vehicle. He rushed to assist the man, who had collapsed beside the vehicle, which was now on fire.
He dragged him to safety and Benton approached the vehicle to check for other occupants. He also realized that Denkenberger’s vehicle was close to the burning crashed vehicle and moved it a safe distance away.
Both officers remained on the scene providing aid until emergency personnel arrived.
