Latest on animal abuse case in Naples where 85 dogs were taken by Humane Society

The Ontario County Humane Society is still housing the 85 terriers seized in a cruelty case from Naples earlier this month.

Having that many dogs come into the shelter has put a strain on resources at the Canandaigua shelter, which has put out an emergency fundraising appeal. At last word, about $53,270 dollars has been donated (almost halfway to the goal).

The dogs are small, mostly Cairn and Yorkshire terrier mixes, so shelter managers tell us they are able to house them several to a pen. As they are brought up to date on shots, the shelter hopes to get the dogs out to foster homes (they are also being treated for fleas, allergies and parasites, and will be spayed and neutered).

At this point, the dogs cannot be adopted because the Naples couple they were taken from refuses to sign over ownership. The next court appearance in their cruelty case is this coming Thursday.
