A popular beach at the north end of Canandaigua Lake was closed Thursday after potential blue-green algae was found in the water.
The blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, was found at Kershaw Park on August 16. The detection was reported by the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association.
New York State Department of Health officials were on site Thursday morning, taking water samples for testing.
Until the state reviews and processes the tests, and then gives the all-clear for the water, Kershaw Park’s beach will be closed for swimming.
The area is one of nine along the lake that is being tested for potential blue-green algae. Sites on the east and west shores of the lake were also found to have possible blooms, according to the New York State DEC.
