Prosecutors push for max sentence in former Congressman Collins’ case

Federal prosecutors strongly urged the judge overseeing sentencing for former Congressman Chris Collins to pursue the maximum.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman made his case to Judge Vernon Broderick for why the former representative should be sentenced more harshly to promote respect for the law, and provide punishment for the offense.

The prosecutor also argued that a harsh punishment would deter future lawmakers from committing similar crimes.

Collins represented the 27th Congressional District until he pleaded guilty to insider trading charges. He also lied to the FBI.
