Sheriff: Two dead as homicide investigation unfolds in Cayuga County

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office says they’re investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

Around 10:25 a.m. on Tuesday deputies were called to 15 Middle Lane in the town of Brutus, according to Sheriff Brian Schenck.

He says that investigators confirmed that an adult male and female were deceased at the location.

Sheriff Schenck says preliminary investigation revealed that James Burnett, 42, of Middle Lane shot-and-killed Kalene Sanderson, 26, of Auburn.

She died as result of the gunshot wound. Investigators say Burnett then shot himself. He also died from that wound.

The investigation remains active, according to Schenck. He asks anyone with information to call 315-253-3902.

The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office, Cayuga County Coroner’s Office, and Cayuga County E-911 all assisted.
