How it all come to be:
Lesley Tillotson approached the Cancer Resource Center (CRC) with the idea of local artists and friends performing to raise funds for CRC. Executive Director Bob Riter remarks “The Cancer Resource Center is delighted to be the recipient of donations from the Art Beyond Cancer event. Ithaca is such a creative community and artists, like everyone, are affected by cancer. Partnerships like this further our work and extend our connection to all members of our community.”
Two participants have experienced cancer themselves. Quilter Aafka Steinhuis experienced lobular breast cancer six years ago and Lesley Tillotson is living and thriving with kidney cancer. Tillotson believes “that almost everyone knows someone who has had cancer, or, unfortunately, has it themselves. The Art Revives & Thrives event came from the idea that even when you have cancer, or are caring for someone with cancer, art can take you beyond focusing on the disease. Art can rejuvenate you and give you joy. And that is what it’s all about – leaning towards joy.”
