Saturday, April 1 @ 12:00 pm - Sunday, April 2 @ 11:00 pm
Welcome spring with nearly 12 hours of dance and music-making at the 10th Fiddlehead Frolic, sponsored by Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca. This year’s extravaganza of contras, cross-step waltzes and other couples dances, instrumental workshops and open jams, song swap, silent auction, and potluck supper, features two hot young bands: Nova from New England (Everest Witman on guitar and feet, Guillaume Sparrow-Pepin on accordion/piano, and Kathleen Fownes on fiddle) plus Ginger Equality from Ithaca/Rochester (Tim Ball, Clare Fraser, and other Ginger Majority members). Philadelphia–area caller Donna Hunt, known for her exquisite dance choreography and clear, efficient teaching, will give new dancers confidence and experienced dancers a challenge. In the versatile, explosive music of Nova, tradition and original compositions are beautifully interwoven. Dance caller and Elixir member Nils Fredland says,“I know a big deal is made about how young they are … but the bottom line for me is that they make really, really good dance music.”
Whole day: members, $34; non-members, $40. Afternoon only or evening only: members, $17; non-members, $20. Children under 12 free. Musicians who come only to jam are admitted free to the jamming. Become a member ($10/yr; $5/yr for students and teens) at the dance for discounted admission to all HFDI dances. Newcomers are welcome; each dance is taught and the steps are simple, with friendly experienced dancers to help. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor; no need to come with a partner. Some housing is available for out-of-town dancers.
