15th Annual HGH Herding Competition in Rushville

A few photos from a unique competition here in the Finger Lakes that took place this weekend. Sheep Herding (by working dogs). The annual event was held at White Clover Sheep Farm in Rushville, NY on a cool, rainy Saturday afternoon.

The trial starts. HGH (herding utiilty dog, a German Shepherd) is quietly and calmly encouraging sheep to exit pen.

Sheep moving calmly & the dog literally flying.

Then HGH guards gate so no sheep turns back.

Holding sheep in a graze for a designated time.

The judge standing in the lane is from Germany and handler in blue cap with crook is also being judged.

As owners of a different types of herding dog we found this most interesting and fun to watch despite the wind and rain.

One dog travelled from North Carolina to compete. The others were from New York.
