40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

Review Posted 01/06/06

Andy Stitzer (the hilarious Steve Carrell) has a pleasant life with a nice apartment and a job stamping invoices at an electronics store. But at age 40, there's one thing Andy hasn't done, and it's really bothering his close group of friends: To the shock of everyone he knows, he's still a virgin. The guys at the store make it their mission to change that, but Andy seems hopeless -- until he meets single mom Trish (Catherine Keener).

Cady's Take:

The 40 Year Old Virgin is a pretty fun movie.  Before watching it I had read various reviews which basically made the film sound like it was going to bring about a revolutionary change in comedic film.  It does not.  It’s a pretty funny movie.

Andy (Steve Carell) is a 40 Year Old Virgin. He is a little nerdy, but not un-attractive, its just that he has bad luck, and now that he has gone so long without “it” actually happening he is apprehensive, embarrassed, and basically afraid to have sex. (Honestly at first it made me kind of sad and I had to cover my eyes with a blanket because I felt so horrible for this guy).   Anyhow Andy’s situation results in a series of funny hi-jinxes and debacles as Andy’s friends ( Paul Rudd, Romany Malco (who is fantastic on the Showtime Series Weeds which adult audiences should check out, and Seth Rogan)  try to get him laid.

Steve Carrell stays true to his art of playing the straight man (as he did so brilliantly on the Daily Show) – but the long and short of it is while this movie did make me laugh out loud in the first 60 minutes, it pretty much drags on for the last 59.

Kyle's Take:

40 Year-Old Virgin is funny enough to rent. Is it the hot comedy I was expecting? Not so much. It is incredibly vulgar, heartwarming at times, and at the very end - just a little too long.

I suppose I was hoping for something a little edgier. I don't really think cheap sex jokes and tons of swearing qualifies a movie as "edgy" - not anymore anyway. It isn't all gratuitous, granted, but some of it is and that is what makes the movie end up feeling like it overstayed its welcome.

I think Steve Carell is a funny guy, and I am a big Paul Rudd fan. This movie sounds and feels a lot like last year's Anchorman with Will Farrell. I understand these movies, and how they are vehicles for their stars, providing good showcases for specific humor. These days that is a little formulaic for me.

This is worth renting and watching, but it is not the wild ride I was hoping for.
