| Anchorman: The Legend of Ron
Burgundy |
| Review Posted 1/19/05 |
Will
Ferrell is hilarious as Ron Burgundy, a big-shot news
anchor in 1970s San Diego. Ron's reign over the newsroom
is questioned when a hardworking feminist reporter,
Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), shows
up and tears the station up with her new ideas. At
first, Ron pretends he's hip to the changes, but when
he tires of it, the true-blue chauvinist in him declares
an all-out war.

Cady's Take: |
Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is a major San
Diego news anchorman in the world of '70s broadcast journalism,
whose network consistently places number one in the ratings.
He is a television icon who thoroughly enjoys boozing and womanizing.
But, when an ambitious newswoman, Veronica Corningstone (Christina
Applegate) is hired by the managing news producer, Ron's life
gets turned upside-down.
Anchorman has some terrific cameos by the likes of Jack Black
as a motorcyclist beaned by Burgundy's burrito, Ben Stiller, Tim
Robbins, Luke Wilson, and Vince Vaughn, who as always, was fantastic
. This film is also filled with lines that most people will be
quoting and imitating for weeks after watching Burgundy on screen.
There are some absurdly hilarious moments
such as a semi-animated sex-fantasy sequence full of white horses
and rainbows, Ron and his news team bursting into the song " Afternoon Delight",
and most memorable was Ron's dog Baxter having a lively conversation
with a bear. These scenes are all worth the rental, but I must
admit that after turning off the movie I walked away with a love/hate
feeling towards it.
"Anchorman'' in my opinion is a step
down in grade for the hugely talented Ferrell, but it will surely
make you laugh. |

| Kyle's Take: |
What
can you really say about "Anchorman" except
that it certainly is a Will Farrell movie. Crude jokes? Check.
Slapstick comedy? Check. Chock full o' cameos? Check! The story
you know, so allow me to focus on a few other things.
The best parts of this movie are the cameos,
including Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, Jack Black, Luke Wilson,
and Tony Dow(!). That voice you hear narrating? Yes, it is Bill
Kurtis, the man who lulls me to sleep every night on A&E's
American Justice. The jokes are subtle, not always laugh-out-loud
funny, but the satire is spot-on and the simple fact that these
characters take themselves so seriously is the real focal point
of the comedy.
There are terrific bits and pieces that do not necessarily add
up to one whole, terrific movie, but there are little gems that
make the movie worth the rental. You cannot go wrong with Fred
Willard, who plays Ron's boss at the local TV news affiliate, and
Christina Applegate is literally wasted in modern movies. Why is
no one giving this woman better parts? She really is an excellent
actress.
Rent this when you are the mood for silly, and make sure you watch
the outtakes at the end!
