Cellular |
| Review Posted 03/17/05 |
A young man named Ryan (Chris Evans) is driving in his car when his cell phone
rings. On the other end of the line is a woman (Kim Basinger) desperate to get
someone to help her, her husband and her son. Apparently, all three have been
abducted by a madman (Jason Statham), and if Ryan doesn't help quickly, they'll
all get killed. But Ryan's cell phone battery is low, and he doesn't know where
the helpless family is. What's he supposed to do?

Cady's Take: |
Jessica
Martin (Kim Bassinger) is a high school biology teacher who gets
kidnapped and locked inside an attic. Since science is her
thing, she uses her MacGyver-like skills and is able to put together
pieces of a broken phone and randomly calls Ryan (Chris Evans),
a young, irresponsible, beach bum. She convinces him to take his
cell phone to the police, but nobody is buying his story at the
police station, so it's up to Ryan to save the day and prevent
Jessica and her family from being executed.
Cellular goes too over-the-top in almost
every sequence, and throws some pretty insane clichés
at you. I was constantly rolling my eyes. It just seemed as though
I was watching the sequel to PhoneBooth, another movie I could
barely sit through!
But, if you can get past the far-fetched
distractions, and numerous plot holes, you might enjoy this movie
based on the amount of action it gives you. On the other hand,
if you are one of those analytical, intellectual movie watching
types that enjoys films that make you think - Don't bother with
Cellular.

| Kyle's Take: |
"Cellular" was a pleasant surprise. This is a plain old action
movie, with the usual preposterous set up and finale. What is surprising
is all that is in between. Kim Basinger plays Jessica, a science
teacher taken hostage from her own home. Her husband has something
they want, and she ends up locked in an attic somewhere with a
broken telephone. Luckily, Jessica is a science teacher and by
clicking some wires together she manages to randomly call Ryan,
played by Chris Evans, a young beach bum who does not believe the
crazy lady on the other end of his cell phone. This is about the
first ten minutes and I remember thinking "Thank goodness this
is only an hour and a half long."
But then "Cellular" surprises us. There are
plenty of good movies that require we suspend belief to enjoy
them. Is it obvious that they could not have made Jessica a receptionist,
because she has to know not only how to repair a broken telephone
(she's a biology teacher but whatever) she also has to know a
few other important scientific-esque things to make it through
the movie alive? Yeah. But so what? This movie is about obstacles
and solutions. The movie throws a problem at Ryan and Jessica,
and one or both of them solve it. In addition, considering they
do not appear in a scene together until the end of the movie,
Basinger and Evans have chemistry.
So throw caution to the wind and give this one a shot. I say that
even if the jumping off point and the destination leave something
to be desired, the ride is well worth 90 minutes.
