Dodgeball
Review Posted 12/15/04

When White Goodman (Ben Stiller), the owner of a trendy, high-end fitness center, makes a move to take over the stuggling local gym run by happy-go-lucky Pete La Fleur (Vince Vaughn), there's only one solution -- dodgeball! Pete and his rag-tag team of underdogs (including Stephen Root and Alan Tudyk) travel to Vegas for a knock-down, drag-out battle in which the winner takes all. Christine Taylor and Rip Torn co-star in this slapstick comedy.

Cady's Take:

Vince Vaughn plays Peter La Fleur, the owner of "Average Joe's Gym". White Goodman (Ben Stiller) owns a franchise of Gyms called "GloboGym". White wants to put up a parking lot where Joe's stands. The bank is getting ready to foreclose on poor Peter so he and his band of misfit gym jocks decide to join a DodgeBall competition. They will be fighting for a $50,000 purse, which will keep the bank from foreclosing on them and allowing their rivals from taking over.

An old man named Patches (Rip Torn), getting around in a motorized wheelchair, decides to train the Average Joes on mastering the essential D's of the sport: "dip, duck, dive and dodge." It's up to the nerds to save the day, oh and the guy who thinks he's a pirate (I have no idea why this character would be considered funny, so don't ask).

The real pleasure in this film was watching the actors repeatedly take real shots to the head from big red rubber balls. But, seeing someone get nailed by a hard-throw ball is only funny the first 8 or 9 times, so late in the movie this aspect loses its luster.

DodgeBall offers a satisfying number of laughs, and some terrific cameo's to boot. It gives us Stephen Root (Office Space), Jason Bateman (TV's Arrested Development), and the awesomely fabulous Justin Long (Warren P. Cheswick from TV's lost gem, Ed). I probably shouldn't leave out David Hasselhoff, William Shatner & Chuck Norris.

The concept of this sport is allowing the strong to prey upon the weak; it's every scrawny kid's worst nightmare, and it brings back some horrific childhood memories. But, it sure does make for a great movie watching experience!

Kyle's Take:

Silly comedies like "Dodgeball" either work, or they don't. This one does. I have to say I am starting to take quite a shine to Vince Vaughn; he plays these loveable losers with a completely straight face - never a wink at the camera. He is totally in character, and he embodies these guys in a way that makes them three-dimensional. Here he plays Peter La Fleur, owner of a run-down gym with weird clientele, who needs to raise $50k to save his business. His competition is White Goodman, owner of Globo Gym, and a total jerk.

Much like "Old School" this movie intends to be ridiculous, and meets its goal. There are several terrific cameos: David Hasselhoff, William Shatner, Chuck Norris, and Lance Armstrong, notably. There are also lots of great little jokes, and some big laughs when the crew from "Average Joe's" gym begins their training with legendary dodgeball champion Patches O'Houlihan.

At an hour and a half, this movie is well paced and hilariously acted.
